If there was no Cy Young, the annual pitchers baseball award likely would be named the Walter Johnson Award. As the only other pitcher to amass over 400 career mound victories (417 to be exact), Johnson was revered throughout baseball, but especially in his adopted home town of Washington, DC. What is truly amazing about The Big Train, is he won all those games while perennially pitching for a second division (and mostly last place) team. This approximately 5 x 7 inch original Type 1 photo shows Johnson and two of his Nationals teammates – Nick Altrock and Dutch Schaefer plus team mascot Tommy Suter. Period pencil editor marks on the reverse indicates “Aug 2 1913 Johnson Day”. In fact, Johnson is shown accepting a large trophy with crossed bats at the top. The team mate names are written in dark ink and can be seen through the front. Multiple wrinkles and light creasing, this image derives from the famed Baseball Magazine collection of vintage photos, and is indicated with their special hologram on the reverse. Full LOA from PSA/DNA (1P03579) as a Type 1 photo, cert number.
