Like many ballplayers, Honus Wagner couldn’t stay away from the game after his playing days had ended. Wagner’s old team, the Pittsburgh Pirates, found immediate use for the old Hall of Famer as a hitting and bench coach. Wagner’s affable personality, boundless work ethic and unequalled talent made him the most qualified coach in the Majors. From 1933 to1952, Wagner shared his knowledge with future Hall of Famers Arky Vaughn, Pie Traynor and Ralph Kiner as well as dozens of All-Stars who all benefitted from the old master’s advice and support. This outstanding Krens bat dates from Wagner’s early years as a Pirates coach, 1933-1935. The Krens 405H model bat shows excellent use with a handle crack. Several ball marks with stitch impressions are visible on the barrel along with cleat imprints. Most importantly, the handle has been taped in a tight spiral pattern, a characteristic of known game used Wagner bats. A great bat Honus Wagner used to demonstrate to the boys how he did it back in the old days. This bat comes with a full LOA from PSA/DNA (1B05138) for the coaching use.
