Babe Ruth Auction To Benefit Babe Ruth Foundation Closing February 18
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/18/2017
The Boston Red Sox were one of the most spectacular baseball teams during the early period of the 20th century. World Series champions in 1912, 1915, 1916, and 1918, the Red Sox were led by their star pitcher Babe Ruth. This 14 x 5 ½ inch scorecard is from a 1916, and provides a recap of the 1915 season when the Red Sox defeated the Phillies in the World Series. This scorecard shows small photographs of 16 Red Sox players along the top row, including Hall of Famers Ruth, Tris Speaker, and Herb Pennock. On the reverse side are similar portraits of 16 Phillies, including Hall of Famers Grover Cleveland Alexander and Dave Bancroft.
The side with the Phillies players offers a recap of pennant winners and World’s Champions, as well as the ten leading batters from each League the previous season. To the right of these statistics is an ad for S.H. Churchill & Co. tailors. It features a portrait of Detroit Tigers Hall of Famer Ty Cobb batting. The opposite side features an unscored scorecard on the scoresheet. The scorecard is in fantastic condition, although it is slightly toned with age. Goldin Auctions will be donating 5% of the winning bid price of this lot and all lots in this auction to the Babe Ruth Birthplace Museum.
