For the first 12 seasons of his Hall of Fame career, Lou Gehrig, “The Iron Horse” played in the shadow of Babe Ruth. While not seeking the limelight of his popular teammate, Gehrig simply went about his business and produced dominant season after dominant season. His devotion to the game and his willingness to play through pain and injury earned the respect of his teammates, and when Ruth left the Yankees following the 1934 season, it was Gehrig who would become the official leader starting in 1935.

The Yankees have had 15 team captains in their illustrious history, but none more iconic than “The Iron Horse as there wouldn’t be another captain in Yankees history until Thurman Munson in 1976. Having already won three World Series titles, Gehrig ascended to the captaincy role starting on Opening Day April 16, 1935. Under Gehrig’s captaincy, the Yankees would win another three World Series titles before his retirement in 1939 after being diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, the fatal disease that would bear his name. Goldin Auctions will be donating 5% of the winning bid price of this lot and all lots in this auction to the Babe Ruth Birthplace Museum.

This offered ticket stub is from Opening Day game on April 16th in which the visiting Boston Red Sox defeated the Yankees 1-0 at Yankee Stadium behind the pitching of Wes Ferrell, who tossed a complete-game two-hitter. Hall of Fame pitcher Lefty Gomez took the hard-luck loss as he surrendered the only run, an unearned run, on only six hits in a complete game effort. Measuring 1 ½ x 3 ¼ inches, this yellow-toned ticket stub has black and red print. This ticket was a “FIELD BOX” ticket with “166” printed in red. Also printed in red vertically on the ticket is “OPENING DAY”. The cost of the ticket was mere $2.20 (tax included). “RAIN CHECK” is centered on the ticket and at the base of the stub is printed “AMERICAN LEAGUE BASEBALL CLUB of NEW YORK”. The ticket shows edge wear and the tear marks on the bottom where the ticket was used for entry, but is in excellent condition. This historic ticket has been encapsulated by PSA/DNA (26612993) and has been graded an EX-MT 6.
