This glimpse behind the scenes comes courtesy of Pride's on-location still photographer Hal McAlpin, who later enjoyed a career in cinematography. Right-handed Cooper, in the role of left-handed Gehrig, tests out his lefty batting grip on a Ruth-model bat under the great Babe's mentorship. While the palm trees of L.A.'s Wrigley Field were shielded from view in the film itself (to re-create Yankee Stadium), they're visible in the background here. The large-format, 10 1/2 x 14 inch photo features outstanding image clarity and is handsomely framed for display. When this item was previously offered at auction several years ago, it was purported to have come from the H&B archives and possibly to have been used for bat-related promotional purposes. This photograph has been classified as Type I by PSA/DNA. Goldin Auctions will be donating 5% of the winning bid price of this lot and all lots in this auction to the Babe Ruth Birthplace Museum.
