Babe Ruth Auction To Benefit Babe Ruth Foundation Closing February 18
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/18/2017
Graded PR 1 by PSA, one of nine copies validated by that company. During the "Roaring ’20’s," Drake’s Cake issued a 64-card set of thin-paper collectibles picturing the era’s top movie stars. Of particular interest to baseball collectors was the release’s inclusion, on card #61, of Yankee superstar Babe Ruth. Ruth had done some "acting" and was under contract to Universal Pictures at the time. Unfortunately for today’s hobbyists, few collectors back then even knew Ruth was in the sparsely distributed set, so very few examples are known to exist. The 2-5/8" x 4-1/8" Drake’s cards were printed on fragile stock and are difficult to find at all, let alone in acceptable condition. The offered specimen’s cardfront features a sepia portrait of Ruth in his pinstripes. Its reverse bears an advertisement for "Drake’s Cake" as well as promotional text covering both the products and the card series. Here's a highly desirable and seldom-encountered Babe Ruth specialty card, in Poor condition. Goldin Auctions will be donating 5% of the winning bid price of this lot and all lots in this auction to the Babe Ruth Birthplace Museum.
