The 1937 New York Yankees won 102 games en route to their ninth American League Pennant and sixth World Series title as they defeated the New York Giants in five games. This was the second of four consecutive World Series the Yankees would win between 1936 and 1940 as the team transitioned from the Murderer’s Row era into the years of the Joe DiMaggio led Yankee teams. DiMaggio and the veteran Lou Gehrig paced the Yankees in 1937, with each player hitting over .345. Gehrig collected 37 home runs and 158 RBI, while DiMaggio led the team in both categories, compiling 46 home runs and 168 RBI in his second professional season.
This Official American League William Harridge baseball features the signatures of 22 members of the 1937 Yankees. In an ultra-rare occurrence, Gehrig has placed his signature on the sweet spot. With the departure of Babe Ruth after the 1934 season, Gehrig was the undisputed heart and soul of the Yanks, earning the right to sign his name on the coveted sweet spot of the ball. Other signatures include Hall of Famers Bill Dickey, and Tony Lazzeri. The remaining signatures include Myril Hoag, Johnny Murphy, Bump Hadley, Joe Glenn, Frank Makosky, and several more. The signatures have been written in black pen. Please note that the signatures of DiMaggio and Joe McCarthy have been deemed clubhouse versions.
