Just three days after sweeping the Philadelphia Phillies to win his second World Championship in as many seasons as manager, Casey Stengel sat down with George Weiss to discuss his future with the ball club. For the Yanks, it was a prudent business decision to offer Casey Stengel a two-year contract for 1951 and 1952. Multi-year contracts were quite rare at the time (in fact the standard manager’s contract made no provision for it), but with a pair of World Championship trophy on the shelf already, Weiss agreed to the two-year deal.
The result? World Championships in 1951 and 1952. This is that original contract Stengel signed with the Yankees. Filled out for a very generous $50,000 per season, Casey signed the document with his given name, “Charles D. Stengel” in black fountain pen. Weiss signed in the same black pen. The contract was meant to be a working document and has the expected edge wear and rounded corners with several slight creases. As the contract was intended to be folded, there are two horizontal creases. Both Stengel and Weiss’ signatures have been perfectly preserved wishing the 4-page contract. A unique contract signed just after two World Championships and ensuring a future two World Championships. The contract comes with an LOA from Steve Grad of Beckett Authentication (A81810) for the signatures.
