After 12 years at the helm of the Yankees, Casey Stengel could look back at a string of accomplishments unparalleled in baseball history: 10 pennants and seven World Championships - a record that has been matched but not surpassed. In 1960 Casey was at the crossroads. The Yankees failed to win the pennant in 1959, finishing an embarrassing third. For 1960, Stengel revamped the Yankees lineup by adding Roger Maris as a devastating addition to Mantle’s potent bat. The new-look Yanks took the pennant by eight games over Baltimore and once again, Casey Stengel looked like a genius, redeeming his dismal 1959 season. In the World Series the Yankees were an inning away from another World Championship in Game 7 when Bill Mazeroski’s home run in the bottom of the 9th won the game and series for Pittsburgh. In the aftermath, Casey Stengel was let go as Yankees manager.
These are the pants Casey wore piloting his team at home in Yankee Stadium during that final 1960 season and have been photo matched to Game 3 of the 1960 World Series. The white flannel pinstripes show heavy use. There is heavy toning throughout with pine tar and turf staining in several places. There is a major repair on the back of the right thigh and the crotch area has worn thin and the flannel pitted. One button is missing from the pair of rear pockets and there are numerous loose threads throughout. The waistband has a Spalding label with washing instructions attached. A white strip tag has “60 Set 2” chain stitched in navy blue. An additional strip tag has “Stengel 37 40 25 ins” chain stitched in navy blue. A well worn piece from Casey’s final year at the helm of the Yankees. The pants come with an LOA from noted game used jersey expert Dave Miedema for the game use and have been photo matched to Game 3 of the 1960 World Series by Sports Investors.
