The New York Yankees won their first World Series of the Core Four era in 1996, crushing the Atlanta Braves in a six game World Series. This was the Yankees first season under the auspices of manager Joe Torre, a future Hall of Famer. Derek Jeter was American League Rookie of the Year that season, setting the stage for a legendary career. The Yanks were bolstered by the savvy play of Hall of Fame veterans Wade Boggs and Tim Raines, as well as Darryl Strawberry and Doc Gooden.
