In 1949 the New York Yankees won the first of their five consecutive World Series championships. Led by the aging Joe DiMaggio and a crack pitching staff led by Vic Raschi, Ed Lopat, and Allie Reynolds, the Yankees won 97 regular season games during manager Casey Stengel’s first year with the team. Their World Series foe was the Brooklyn Dodgers, a team the Yankees would face 11 times in the Fall Classic. This iteration of the rivalry ended the way most did: with a dominating Yankee victory. The Bronx Bombers won the series in five games to win their 12th World Series title.
