Don Newcombe was one of the first great African-American pitchers in baseball. A wily righty who joined the Majors in 1949 at the age of 23, Newcombe won the Rookie of the Year award in his first season with the Brooklyn Dodgers. Newk’s best season came in 1956, when he won 27 games, the National League MVP and the Major League Cy Young Award (only one Cy Young was awarded per season until 1967). The previous season, Newcombe won 20 games and helped lead the Dodgers to their only World Series championship in Brooklyn.
The first item offered here is an 11 x 14 inch black and white photograph of Newcombe signing autographs with Jackie Robinson and Roy Campanella. Newcombe signed the photograph in blue marker, adding the inscription “Hotel Kenmore / Boston / 1951”. Additionally, an Official Major League Allan H. Selig baseball signed on the sweet spot by Newcombe in blue pen is offered. Both items come with individual COAs from PSA/DNA.
