Presented here is letter typed and signed by National Baseball Hall of Fame member Eppa Rixey. A scholarly pitcher in the mold of Christy Mathewson, Rixey combined impeccable control with a staggering pitching intellect. The winner of 266 games, Rixey enjoyed his best seasons as a Cincinnati Red, spending the final 13 seasons of his career in Cincinnati. In 1921, Rixey set an MLB record by allowing only one home run in 301 innings pitched. “Jeptha” retired in 1933, and was inducted into Cooperstown in 1963.
This typed letter was written on Meyers and Rixey Insurance company stationary. Rixey is replying to a “Charles M. Kinsolving”, a man whose son, Charles Jr., was a fan of Rixey. In this letter, Rixey is self-effacing and kind, referring to himself somewhat jokingly as “an old ‘has been’” and inviting the Kinsolving’s to visit him in Cincinnati. Rixey signed the bottom of this letter in black pen. The letter has been attached to a rigid sheet of paper and shows evidence of age and wear. This item comes with a LOA from JSA (Z58562).
