Presented here is an index card sized cut signed by Hall of Fame shortstop Roderick “Bobby” Wallace. Wallace debuted in 1894 for the Cleveland Spiders of the National League, playing for 25 seasons until retiring in 1918 with the St. Louis Cardinals. Wallace started his career as a pitcher for the Spiders, compiling a 24-22 record in three seasons before transitioning to the field full-time, where the Spiders could take advantage of his stellar fielding every day. Wallace’s best season at the plate came in 1897, when he hit .335 with 112 RBI and 21 triples for Patsy Tebeau’s Cleveland ball club. Wallace, who also played 15 seasons for the St. Louis Browns, was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1953 via the Veteran’s Committee.
Wallace penned a lengthy inscription on this note card that reads “Hi Danny / your letter just received and adding an extra card just in case. All good wishes / Sincerely / Roderick J Wallace”. Wallace dated this note card to September 4th, 1959, just over a year before his death at the age of 86. This item comes with a LOA from JSA (Z58571).
