LeRoy Neiman was one of America’s premier sporting artists in the second half of the 20th century. For many years he painted scenes at Madison Square Garden, creating live masterpieces during basketball games, boxing matches, and more. This picture is one of those creations, a brilliant and understated sketch of New York Knicks power forward and center Spencer Haywood attempting a layup against an unidentified team.
Haywood, a 2015 inductee to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, was an incredibly important player in both the ABA and NBA. It was his lawsuit against the NBA that paved the way for players to enter the league without attending college. This black and white artist's proof is 12 x 9 inches and comes encased in a 25 x 21 inch frame. Neiman signed the bottom of the painting in pencil, adding the inscription “77” for the year the painting was created. This autograph comes with a LOA from Steve Grad of Beckett Authentication (A03135).
