Joe Louis and Max Baer were two of the greatest boxers of the 1930s and 1940s, during an era where great heavyweight fighters were in high demand but short supply. Louis and Baer fought once, in 1935, just shy of a year before Louis engaged in his famous first fight with Max Schmeling (who Baer had defeated in 1933). Louis dominated his fight with Baer, knocking down the Nebraska-born fighter in the fourth round. The fight, which was held in Yankee Stadium, was named the fight of the year by The Ring Magazine. This photograph shows two portraits, one of Louis and one of Baer. Louis signed his name beneath his portrait, while Baer wrote “Evelyn Ryer / Love & Hugs” above his signature. The signatures and inscription have been written in blue pen. This 7 x 5 inch photograph has been encapsulated and authenticated by PSA/DNA (83976552).
