They claimed the American League East Division title by 22 games over the Red Sox. The Yankees were led by a balanced but explosive offense, as Derek Jeter, Tino Martinez, and Paul O’Neill all had some of their best seasons. David Wells and David Cones anchored a strong pitching staff, winning a combined 38 games and dropping only 11 and Wells tossing a perfect game on May 17th.
