Presented here is a baseball signed by 28 members of the 1940 Detroit Tigers. The Tigers won the American League pennant in 1940, and along the way became the first Major League team to record a yearly attendance of over one million fans. The Tigers were led offensively by Hall of Famer Hank Greenberg, the 1940 AL MVP. Greenberg hit 41 homers , with 150 RBI and a .340 batting average to help Detroit to a 90-64 record. The Tigers edged out the Indians by one game to claim the pennant, setting up a World Series matchup with the Cincinnati Reds. The Tigers fought valiantly for the title, but came up short in a thrilling seven game series. The final game finished 2-1 at Crosley Field, as Paul Derringer outdueled Bobo Newsom to give the National League another World Series title.
