From the Philadelphia Athletics inaugural season in 1901, and lasting until the end of the 1950 campaign, the team knew no other manager than Connie Mack. A brilliant tactician, expert judge of talent, and a baseball visionary, Mack currently sits on the top spot of the all-time managerial wins list, with his 3,731 victories almost 1,000 greater than John McGraw’s tally in second place. Mack led the A’s to five World Series titles during his tenure as their skipper, and engineered one of baseball’s all-time great dynasties. In 1937, Mack was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame.
This 7 x 9 inch photograph is a black and white headshot of an aging Mack, who was born Cornelius McGillicuddy. Mack is dressed in a suit, as was his custom. Unlike many managers of the past and present, Mack unfailingly skippered his team from the dugout dressed in livery more befitting a banker or lawyer than a rough-and-tumble ball player. He signed this photograph in black pen. The photograph is accompanied by a LOA from PSA/DNA (AB05058).
