Presented here is a team photograph of the 1940 Chicago White Sox signed by 30 members of the American League squad. The 1940 White Sox finished the season with a record of 82-72 under manager Jimmy Dykes, good for fourth place in the American League, only eight games behind the pennant-winning Detroit Tigers. Joe Kuhel was the offensive powerhouse for the Sox, hitting 27 home runs with 94 RBI, while Luke Appling hit .348 with 79 RBI and 197 hits, all without hitting a single home run in a vintage, dead ball era performance. The White Sox boasted a deep pitching staff in 1940, with six starters winning 10 or more games during the regular season.
This team photograph shows all of the Sox in their home whites, posed in front of the Comiskey Park stands. This photo has been signed by Hall of Famers Luke Appling and Ted Lyons, as well as Skeeter Webb, Taffy Wright, Muddy Ruel, Jimmy Dykes, Mule Haas, Mike Kreevich, Mike Tresh, Eddie Smith, Pete Appleton, Bob Kennedy, Larry Rosenthal, Monty Stratton, Jack Knott, Eric McNair, Joe Kuhel, Moose Solters, Bill Dietrich, Ken Silvestri, Tom Turner, Clint Brown, Ed Weiland, Thornton Lee, Johnny Rigney, and several more. The signatures have been written in blue and black pen. This item comes with a LOA from JSA (Z58621).
