In 1898, the Boston Beaneaters won the National League pennant by a comfortable six games, finishing with a record of 102 wins and 47 losses. The star of the team was twirler Kid Nichols, who won 31 games for the second consecutive season, as well as posting a 2.13 ERA in 42 starts. Hall of Famers Hugh Duffy, Billy Hamilton, and Jimmy Collins handled the offensive duties as manager Frank Selee’s squad dominated the National League.
This offered scorecard is from the second game of a doubleheader against the Cincinnati Reds at South End Grounds on August 22nd. The game was a matchup between Red Sox pitcher Ted Lewis against Reds hurler Frank Dwyer and finished as a 5-5 tie. This scorecard is partially filled out in gray pencil, and contains the stat lines for a plethora of Hall of Fame players, including Bid McPhee, Jake Beckley, Collins, Hamilton, and Duffy. It is in good condition, save for a small tear on the bottom right corner. A crease from folding runs across the middle of the page, but it does not influence any of the writing on the scorecard.
