Ed Walsh was among the last of the inning eating workhorse pitchers of the deadball era. A master of the spitball, at the time a legal pitch, Walsh led the American League in innings pitched four times and games started five times. The last pitcher to win 40 games in a season, Walsh accomplished the feat in 1908. He started 49 games that season while maintaining an ERA of 1.42. To this day, Walsh holds the major league record for lowest career ERA with a mark of 1.82 earned runs allowed per nine innings. In 1946, 29 years after his retirement, the former White Sox was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame by the Old Timers Committee.
The item presented here is a newspaper photograph of Walsh affixed to an album page. The Hall of Famer signed the album page in black fountain pen as “Ed A. Walsh”. He added the inscription “To the young men of tomorrow / Yours Resp. / Ed A. Walsh / White Sox”. This item comes with a LOA from JSA.
