After retiring from baseball in 1960 with a .344 batting average and 521 home runs, Hall of Famer Ted Williams was a special batting instructor for the Red Sox from 1961-1966 and served as team vice president from 1965-68. Following his managerial stint with the expansion Washington Senators (who would become the Texas Rangers) that started with the 1969 season and ended in 1971, Williams returned to the Red Sox organization, where he would be a spring training instructor.

Williams wore this gray button-down Boston Red Sox road jersey during the 1979 spring training. During that era, the Red Sox did not wear batting practice jerseys, so Williams wore this gray jersey. “BOSTON” is sewn across the chest in navy blue tackle twill on this size 50 Wilson jersey. There is an off-white inner lining that runs along the inner collar and down the buttons. The back of the jersey has Williams’ retired number “9” sewn on in navy blue tackle twill. A ¾ x 1 inch gray patch with “79” in black is sewn on at the base of the front left tail. The jersey displays moderate wear with fading on the stitching of the number and letters.

Also included in this lot is a pair of matching gray Wilson pants, also worn by Williams during the 1982 spring training season. The waist size is 42 and sewn on the inner band is one gray patch that reads “9 26” indicating player and inseam and on the other side of the Wilson tag is a gray patch that reads “82” for the year. The pants have two back pockets and have matching gray belt loops. These pants show moderate wear and both the jersey and pants come with a LOA from noted game used jersey expert Dave Miedema.
