In 1912, the Boston Red Sox stormed to a World Series title behind their so-called “Golden Outfield” of Tris Speaker, Harry Hooper, and Duffy Lewis. Speaker led the way, leading the American League in home runs, doubles, and on base percentage while winning the prestigious Chalmer’s Award, the precursor to the modern MVP award. Hooper, one of the best defensive outfielders in history, personified the deaball era style of play, while Lewis led the team with 109 RBI.
During the regular season, the Red Sox won a staggering 105 games in their first season at Fenway Park, as Smoky Joe Wood turned in one of the greatest pitching seasons in Major League history, at one point winning 16 consecutive games as he finished with a 34-5 record and 1.91 ERA. The Red Sox faced the Giants in the 1912 World Series, dispatching their National League foes in eight games. The final game was a 10-inning thriller, as Hugh Bedient and Smoky Joe combined to defeat Christy Mathewson by a score of 3-2.
