As a pillar of the democracy upon which America rests today, few individual men are as important as James Monroe. A Founding Father, Monroe was the fifth President of the United States, and the last to run without serious opposition. The Virginian collected all but one vote in the Electoral College in the election of 1820, and his early presidency was referred to as “The Era of Good Feelings”. Monroe was in office from 1817 to 1825. When he stepped down from the presidency, Monroe was arguably the most qualified politician ever, holding more elected positions than any other president in American history. Monroe, one of the last surviving Founding Fathers, died on July 4th, 1831.
