This vibrant canvas sign hung above the visiting clubhouse of a football stadium during the 1920s, welcoming groups of grizzled warriors to some hardscrabble stadium during the early years of the sport of football. This poster would not have looked out of place at Staley Field, or Universal Stadium, or Soldier Field, inviting the leather-headed athletes of yesteryear to an anonymous muddy field of battle in the Midwest. During the era that this sign was displayed, football grew from a game that mostly resembled a flailing swath of arms and legs slowly driving towards the end zone, into the free-flowing game that millions of fans enjoy today. Ever since the founding of the NFL in 1922, the sport of football has pushed forward, its inexorable march slowed by neither time nor rival leagues.

     This poster features a football player cradling a ball in his left arm and executing a textbook stiffarm with his right. His jersey and socks are a muted scarlet, while his helmet and pants match the same shade of tan. “WELCOME” is spelled out on the top of the poster in red text over a white banner, with “VISITOR” rendered across the bottom in the same fashion. This canvas poster is ensconced in a 23 ½ x 36 ½ inch frame. It is in wonderful condition and has been professionally framed by stretching the canvas over a wood frame backing in similar fashion to what an artist would use for an oil painting. There is no glazing or Plexi-Glass used which allows the fabric to breathe and framed in a fashion so it can be hung from the back, or from the top to be suspended from above. A perfect piece to add to one’s “man cave”, football collection and restaurant and/or place of business. This piece projects all of the nostalgia associated with the bygone era of America’s sport. This sign is a truly unique piece of football history, and one that would instantly add prestige and grace to any collection.
