Presented here is the baseball used for Tony Gwynn’s 2,860th career hit. The game, a contest between the San Diego Padres and San Francisco Giants at 3Com Park, took place on June 21st, 1998, and finished 5-1 in favor of the visiting Padres. Gwynn went 3-4 in this game, with a double, an RBI, and an intentional walk. His 2,860th career hit came in the top of the ninth inning, when he looped a single to center field against Padres reliever Rich Rodriguez. Gwynn, still an adept hitter despite his advancing age in 1998, was an All-Star, and hit .321 with 16 homers and 69 RBI. Gwynn would play for parts of three more seasons with the Padres, finishing his career with 3,141 hits and eight batting titles. In 2007, Gwynn was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame, alongside Cal Ripken Jr.
This Official National League Leonard S. Coleman baseball has Gwynn’s blue ballpoint pen autograph on the sweet spot. The inscriptions “S.F.”, “6/21/98”, and “#2860” have been penned in an unknown hand. This baseball, which shows heavy use, comes with a LOA from MEARS for game use, and a LOA from JSA for the signature (S81040).
