The 1968 MLB season is known as the “Year of the Pitcher”. Hurlers ruled the season, with a pitcher winning not only the Cy Young Award, but also the MVP in both leagues. Bob Gibson claimed the honors in the NL, while Detroit Tigers pitcher Denny McClain did the double in the American League. McClain channeled the spirit of Smoky Joe Wood to become the last American League pitcher to win over 30 games, finishing with a 31-6 record and an ERA of 1.96. The Tigers faced Gibson and the Cardinals in the World Series, with McClain winning the sixth game on only two days rest. The Tigers other great starter, Mickey Lolich, won another three games, leading the Tigers to a seven game World Series victory and earning World Series MVP honors.

This Official American League Joseph E. Cronin baseball features the signatures of 24 members of the World Series champion ’68 Tigers. Manager Mayo Smith has signed the sweet spot of this ball, while Hall of Famers Al Kaline and Ed Mathews have put pen to orb. Other signatures include Mickey Lolich, Dick McAuliffe, Jon Warden, Denny McClain, Don Wert, Wayne Comer, Jim Price, Johnny Sain, Tony Cuccinello, Mickey Stanley, Gates Brown, Don McMahon, Willie Horton, and several more. The signatures have been written in black and blue pen. This item comes with a LOA from PSA/DNA (J86848).
