Presented here is a document from 1990 that has been signed by Fidel Castro, the former leader of communist Cuba. Castro rose to power in the late 1950’s, wresting power away from the government of Fulgencio Batista. Since then, and until he stepped down in the mid-2000’s, Castro implemented a wide range of Marxist-Leninist, anti-globalization, and pro-environment policies meant to turn Cuba into a utopian communist state. Castro, whose legacy is complicated at best, passed away in late 2016 at the age of 90.
This first page of the two-sided document originates from the Ministry of the Interior of the Republic of Nicaragua, and refers to the friendship between the two countries. It has been signed in black pen by Tomas Borge, one of the cofounders of the Sandinista National Liberation Front in Nicaragua. The other side of the document features a typed letter to Brigadier General Eloy Perez Alfonso, the Second-In-Command of the “Direccion General de Seguridad Personal”. From Castro, this letter details Alfonso’s responsibilities relating to the visit of Borge. Castro signed this letter, which was typed on January 29th, 1990, in blue pen. This letter comes with a LOA from JSA (W03169) that authenticates the Castro signature.
