Although he often toiled in the large shadow of Jimmie Foxx while he played for the Philadelphia Athletics, Al Simmons was one of the foundational pieces of the A’s dynasty of the late 1920s and early 1930s. In his first nine seasons in baseball, Simmons appeared in three World Series, winning two, while averaging 23 homers and 129 RBI with a .358 batting average for the A’s. His remaining years in baseball were somewhat nomadic, although “Bucketfoot Al” did appear in the first three All-Star Games while a member of the Chicago White Sox. Simmons retired after the 1944 season with a career batting average of .334, 1,828 RBI, and 2,927 career hits. In 1953, Simmons was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame.

This black and white 8 x 10 inch photograph was taken by George Burke. It shows Simmons during his tenure with the A’s, in the follow through of the swing that gave him his nickname. Simmons signed this photograph in black pen, adding the inscriptions “My Best Wishes To Dr. Steen” and “Phila. Athletics 1940”. This item comes with a LOA from PSA/DNA (X04707).
