John Vukovich, a longtime utility infielder and later coach, wore this Chicago Cubs home jersey during the 1984 regular season as a Cubs coach. “Vuke” helped coach the team to a rare playoff appearance, where they fell in five games to the San Diego Padres. Later, Vukovich got the opportunity to manage the Cubs, albeit for one day, splitting a doubleheader after Jim Frey’s ousting. Vukovich joined the Phillies in 1988, managing them for nine games at the end of that season, before spending the remainder of his life on the Phillies coaching staff.
This jersey, a white, pinstriped pullover has a large Cubs logo sewn on the left chest area. A Cubs logo is sewn on the left sleeve, and Vuke’s number “2” is sewn on the back of the jersey in blue tackle twill. Wilson size “42” and “2 84 2 42” tags are sewn on the back inside collar of this jersey. An “84” tag is sewn on the front left tail. According to noted game used jersey expert Dave Miedema, who has provided a LOA for this jersey, it appears to have been recycled for use in the minor leagues and “then had the ‘2’ quality restored later”. Additionally, Vukovich has signed the chest of this jersey in blue marker. This item comes with a LOA from JSA (Z58628) for the signature, as well as a Miedema LOA for game use.
