Presented here is a football signed by 15 members of the 1928 Notre Dame football team, including legendary head coach Knute Rockne. Rockne coached the Fighting Irish for 13 seasons, leading the team to a remarkable 105-12 record, including five ties. The Irish were National Champions thrice over, and Rockne’s career winning percentage of .881 remains the highest of all-time. Rockne coached Notre Dame from 1918 until his death in a plane crash in 1931.
This football was presented to Oliver Cunningham, a member of the prominent Cunningham-Carmichael family of South Bend. A progenitor of the Carmichael family invented the hollow steel plow, one of the most important agricultural developments of the era. “To Oliver Cunningham” is printed in black on this pigskin. This vintage Wilson football features the black pen signatures of 15 Notre Dame players, as well as Rockne. Signatures include George Leppig, John Coldrick, Ed Collins, Fred Miller, Jim Brady, Jim Bray, Moon Mullins, Frank Carideo, Joe Nash, Tom Conley, Billy Dew, George Shay, J. Smith, and Tim Moynihan. This item comes with a LOA from PSA/DNA (T00822).
