Presented here is the Notre Dame Official Football Review from the 1928 college football season. This was Notre Dame’s 11th season with Hall of Fame coach Knute Rockne at the helm, and the Fighting Irish finished the season with a record of 5-4. This was Rockne’s worst record as the coach of Notre Dame, but he followed his disappointing year with two consecutive undefeated National Championship teams in his final two years of coach at Notre Dame before his tragic death. Although the ’28 team was not up to the standard expected from Rockne, they still defeated two of their chief rivals, dispatching Navy in front of 120,000 fans at Soldier Field and clipping Army 12-6 in front of a packed house at Yankee Stadium. It was during halftime of the Army game, with the score tied 0-0, that Rockne delivered his now-legendary “Win one for the Gipper” speech, exhorting a heroic performance from his squad against a then-undefeated Army team.
