The Baseball Writers Association of America (BWAA) was founded in 1908 as the sport of baseball continued to gain national popularity. The BWAA worked to ensure that a degree of professionalism could be found in baseball press boxes, as well as to ensure uniformity of scoring methods and statistical record keeping in the early days of baseball. This program is from the “Eighth Annual Eating and Oratorical Contest”, held by the New York chapter of the BWAA in 1931. A plethora of incredible guests were present, including Knute Rockne and the mayor of New York, Jimmy Walker. The back of this program has been signed by 14 luminaries, including members of the National Baseball Hall of Fame Lou Gehrig, Babe Ruth, Eddie Collins, Bill Terry, and Mickey Cochrane. Other signatures include Knute Rockne, Jack Dempsey, Benny Friedman, Moe Berg, Mule Haas, and Jimmie Dykes, among several others. The signatures have been written in black pen. This item comes with a LOA from PSA/DNA (Q04599).
