This powder blue St. Louis Cardinals road jersey was worn by Bob Sykes in 1979 before being recycled for new acquisition Bruce Sutter to wear in the 1981 campaign. Sutter, the 1979 National League Cy Young Award winner, instantly assumed the closers role for the Cardinals, leading the National League in saves during the strike-shortened 1981 season. Sutter retired after the 1988 season, having accumulated exactly 300 saves during his lengthy career. In 2006, Sutter was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame.

This powder blue road pullover has “Cardinals” and the ballclub’s iconic “birds on a bat” logo chenille stitched on the front in red and yellow. Sutter’s number “42” is sewn on the chest and back in red and navy blue tackle twill. “SUTTER” is sewn across the back shoulders in red and navy blue tackle twill over the outline of the since removed “SYKES”. The outline of Syke’s number “42” is present on the sleeves after their removal post-1980. A Rawlings size “44” tag with an attached “Set 1 1979” flag is sewn on the inside front right tail of this jersey. This jersey shows heavy use, and has been signed on the back “4” by Sutter, who inscribed “82 WS Champs” next to his signature. This item comes with a LOA from MEARS for game use, and a LOA from PSA/DNA (AC02964) for the signature.
