2017 October Legends Closing November 11
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/12/2017
The summer of 1961 in New York City belonged to two unassuming country boys who happened to share the outfield of Yankee Stadium. Roger Maris and Mickey Mantle each chased Babe Ruth’s single season home run record, trading round trippers as the Yankees racked up 109 victories. In the end, Maris surpassed the record, hitting his 61st in the final game, a 1-0 victory over the Yankees at home, in front of only 23,154 onlookers. Although Maris, through injury and bad luck, could never quite replicate his magical form of 1961, he has gone down in baseball history as one of the game’s greatest heroes.
The centerpiece of this framed display is an index card signed by Maris. He used black pen to scribe his signature, which presents beautifully. The index card is framed underneath a photograph of Maris clutching a bat at Yankee Stadium in his home whites. This display comes in a 21 x 14 inch frame. The signed index card has been encapsulated and authenticated by PSA/DNA (12144414).
