In 1967, the Velvet Underground released their first album, The Velvet Underground and Nico, in collaboration with legendary artist Andy Warhol. This album was poorly received when it was released, but as the Velvet Underground gained clout and fans, it has become one of the most influential albums in the history of rock music. The content of this album was dark, seedy, and often illegal, pushing the boundaries of what was considered acceptable at the time. It was recorded while the Velvet Underground were performing as a part of Warhol’s Exploding Plastic Inevitable tour, and Warhol exerted tremendous amounts of influence on the production of the album. Perhaps most famously, his print of a banana became the front cover for album. The banana was applied as a sticker to early pressings, and when removed showed a bare, pink banana on the album cover. This album is an exemplary piece of rock and roll history, and has been signed by Lou Reed, Andy Warhol, and one other. Both artists have signed in black marker, adding the inscription “To Jerry” to each of their signatures. The album shows minor wear from age, but remains in beautiful condition. Several pieces of tape are placed over parts of the banana sticker. This item comes with a LOA from JSA.
