Rogers Hornsby was one of baseball’s greatest hitters during the end of the deadball and beginning of the live ball era. A pure hitter, Hornsby batted over .400 three times, including an otherworldly .424 in 1924. Hornsby was a two-time Triple Crown winner, an impressive feat for a second baseman, as the position has traditionally been manned by contact hitters and slick fielders. In fact, Hornsby’s career home run total of 301 has been surpassed by only one second baseman, Jeff Kent, as of the beginning of the 2017 season. Hornsby, a two-time MVP and seven-time batting champion, was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1942.
This book, “My War With Baseball”, was written by Hornsby and Bill Surface, with Casey Stengel providing a foreword, in 1962, just a year before Hornsby’s death. Bill Ballantine has provided numerous humorous illustrations that dot the pages of this book. Hornsby signed the first page of this book in blue pen, inscribing “To Louis Schaffer / With Best Wishes from / Rogers Hornsby / 1962”. This book comes with a LOA from PSA/DNA.
