Presented here is a seat taken from the Polo Grounds, the legendary home of primarily the New York Giants, but also home at times to the Mets and Yankees. The Polo Grounds was built in 1890, but a 1911 fire nearly razed the quirky stadium. The center field fence was located 483 feet away from home plate, with left field and right field both less than 300 feet away. Originally a Players’ League park, the Polo Grounds was demolished in 1964 after the Mets moved to Shea Stadium in Flushing. Throughout the history of the Polo Grounds numerous indelible plays were made on its sloping grass, including Willie Mays’ iconic basket catch in the 1954 World Series.

This seat is made of orange metal and dark green wood. A faded “22”, indicating the seat number”, is visible on the top slat of the back of the seat. Throughout the history of Polo Grounds, players such as Mark Koenig and Don Mueller called that number their own. A black and orange “NY” figural logo is displayed on each metal side of the chair. This chair is a bona fide piece of baseball history, and would be a welcome addition to any collection.
