In 1963, the New York Yankees won 104 regular season games as everyday catcher Elston Howard claimed the American League MVP award. They won the pennant by a comfortable 10.5 games, setting up a postseason confrontation with the recently relocated Los Angeles Dodgers. Unfortunately for the Yankees, the Dodgers rotation of Sandy Koufax, Don Drsydale, and Johnny Podres shut down the Yankees bats in a series that saw only 16 total runs scored.
