Presented here is a program from a 1933 exhibition game between the New York Giants and St. Lawrence University on June 12th. This event was organized to honor Giants pitcher Hal Schumacher, who was awarded his degree from St. Lawrence on this date. The Giants, who were in the midst of a contentious pennant race at the time, defeated the St. Lawrence squad 12-4. Schumacher pitched the first two innings, holding St. Lawrence without a run and surrendering only one hit. The Giants would go on to win the NL pennant and defeat the Washington Senators in the 1933 World Series. Schumacher, who won 19 games in ’33, started two games in the World Series, winning one and finishing with a 2.45 ERA while knocking in three RBI from the plate as the Giants won in five games.
The program has a picture of Schumacher on the front. The same picture was also used for the 1934-36 Batter-Up #52 Hal Schumacher baseball card. Schumacher signed the cover of the program in black pen, inscribing “N.Y. Giants” under his signature. Signatures inside the cover include the Hall of Famers Mel Ott, Travis Jackson, and Bill Terry. Other signatures include Jo-Jo Moore, Frank Snyder, Hughie Critz, Paul Richards, Glenn Spencer, Bernie James, Ray Starr, Sam Leslie, Homer Peel, Blondy Ryan, Jack Salveson, Al Smith, Roy Parmelee, Kiddo Davis, Johnny Vergez, and one other. The signatures have been written in black pen. This program comes with a LOA from JSA (Z02850).
