In 1937, at the ripe old age of 33, Milkman Jim burst onto the Major League scene with a sensational rookie campaign that earned him 4th place in MVP voting. He posted a 20-11 record for the Boston Bees with an NL-best 2.38 ERA, 24 complete games and five shutouts. In 1940, Turner won a World Series title with the Reds and nine seasons after he his pro debut, Turner wrapped up his playing career with the Yankees and led the AL in saves. Later he served as Casey Stengel's pitching coach throughout the 1950s dynasty years. Turner was so in tune with the Bronx Bomber pitching staff—Ford, Reynolds, Lopat, Raschi, etc.—that Phil Rizzuto once said, "[Jim] knew if one of them changed a blade in their razors."
