Dazzy Vance is one of baseball’s great success stories; a pitcher who debuted in 1915 at the age of 24, but would have to wait until 31 to earn his first Big League victory. When that first win came the floodgates opened, and the great Vance would go on to win 197 MLB games, mostly with the Brooklyn Robins/Dodgers, pitching until the age of 44. Vance won the National League MVP Award in 1924 while pitching for the Brooklyn Robins, leading baseball in wins (28), ERA (2.16), complete games (30), and strikeouts (262) to earn the rare pitching Triple Crown. Vance retired after the 1935 season, having spent one final season in Brooklyn after winning the 1934 World Series as a member of the “Gashouse Gang” St. Louis Cardinals. He was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1955.
