In 1986, as the New York Mets stormed to 108 regular season victories and their second World Series title, fans of the Mets were able to listen to a powerhouse broadcasting team that rivaled the on-field players in terms of sheer talent. Led by Ralph Kiner, who had been calling games for the Mets since 1962, the team of Kiner, Tim McCarver, Steve Zabriskie, and Rusty Staub lent their dulcet tones to one of the greatest teams in baseball history.

The Emmy award presented here was given to Rusty Staub, a rookie in the broadcasting booth but a seasoned professional baseball player. Staub enjoyed two separate stints with the Mets, playing first from 1972 to 1975. A key member of the 1973 NL Champion Mets, Staub was traded to the Detroit Tigers during the winter of 1975. He rejoined the Mets in 1981, playing part-time for the Mets until his retirement after the 1985 season, when he immediately joined the broadcasting booth.

This 1985-86 New York Area Emmy Award was granted to the broadcasting team of Kiner, McCarver, Zabriskie, and Staub in the category of “Outstanding Sports Coverage” for Mets Baseball ’86. The award is roughly 11 ½ inches tall, and stands on a gold pedestal with a black plaque. The award shows a winged woman holding an atom aloft, and weighs roughly 48 ounces. This item comes with a LOA from Rusty Staub.
