The 1968 Mexico City Olympics were marked by the raised fists of John Carlos and Tommie Smith, medalists in the 200 meters who extended gloved fists into the air for the noble cause of human rights. Although controversial at the time, the lens of time has placed Carlos and Smith alongside Muhammad Ali as some of the most important athlete-activists of all time. The United States dominated the podium in every way during the ’68 Games, leading the medal charts with 45 gold medals and 107 total, 16 more than the Soviet Union. American athletes such as Bob Beamon, Dick Fosbury, and George Foreman claimed gold medals in the high altitude of Mexico City, with Beamon increasing the long jump world record by a staggering 22 inches!
Offered here is a stunning 1968 US Olympic Team 10K gold ring. “US OLYMPIC TEAM 1968” is etched in high relief on the face around a beset red stone.
