On May 2nd, 1939, Lou Gehrig did not take the field for the first time in 2,130 games. Babe Dahlgren took his place, signifying the end of one of baseball’s greatest careers. Dahlgren performed admirably in relief of the soon-to-be Hall of Famer, hitting 15 home runs with 85 RBI as the Yankees won yet another World Series title. Dahlgren played one more season in New York before his journeyman career took him six more cities before his retirement in 1946. He has signed this Official American League Bobby Brown baseball in black pen on the sweet spot. Dahlgren added the inscription “Replaced Lou Gehrig 5/2/39” to his signature.
