Presented is a 36-card complete set of one of the most difficult to acquire 1950's releases. Say the word "regional" to a card collector and the sets from the mid-1950's produced by Wilson Weiners, Red Heart Dog Food and Dan Dee Potato Chips are usually the first that come to mind. In 1950, the name to beat was "Bowman" and Drake's Cookies. Drake's issued a 36-card, black-and-white set that probably didn't offer much of a threat to the boldly colored, aesthetically pleasing Bowman issue of the same year. Today, this series is usually overlooked by collectors due to their extreme scarcity. Drake's did try to appeal to youngsters by hinting at another new "fad" of the day by calling their 2-1/2" x 2-1/2" cards "TV Baseball Series." This was an effort, albeit a poor one, to make the cards resemble television sets that were just beginning to become staples of American households. Television caught on, Drake's baseball cards didn't. The low-grade card stock and black fields are extremely fragile and chipping is almost unavoidable. Each card back carries a biography of the player along with advertising for "Drake's Oatmeal or Jumble Cookies." This presentation includes: #'s 1 Roe (VG), 5 Snider (VG-), 6 Campanella (EX), 9 Thomson (EX-), 11 Hodges (VG/EX), 13 Doerr (EX/MT), 14 Spahn (EX), 18 Furillo (VG/EX), 19 Reese (VG), 23 Henrich (PR, pinhole), 24 Berra (color touch), 25 Rizzuto (VG/EX), 28 Reynolds (EX), 33 DiMaggio (EX) and 36 Slaughter (VG). Grades 14% EX to EX/MT, 61% VG to VG/EX, 25% lesser (including a few with color touch). A rare opportunity to acquire an extremely scarce regional issue, one highly coveted by advanced collectors today. 100% of the proceeds from the sale of this lot will go towards the hurricane relief efforts.
