For several magical seasons in the early 1960’s, Roger Maris made his teammate and future Hall of Famer Mickey Mantle look mortal. The American League MVP in 1960 and 1961, Maris joined the Yankees for the 1960 season, where he hit 39 home runs with an American League-best 112 RBI. In 1961, Maris turned in one of the greatest offensive performances in baseball history, setting a new baseball record with 61 long balls and again leading the American League in RBI, this time with 141. The Maris-led Yankees compiled an astonishing 109-53 record in 1961, overcoming their shocking loss in the previous season’s World Series by annihilating the Cincinnati Reds in a short five game series. Maris played in the Major Leagues until 1968, although due to a series of chronic injuries only reached the 30 home run plateau once more, in 1962.
This bat is a Louisville Slugger K55 model, with Maris’ facsimile signature etched in the barrel. Maris has placed his live signature, one of the most sought-after in the hobby due to his massive talent and untimely passing, on the barrel of this bat in blue marker. His signature is nearly perfect, and today projects the same abundant quality as the moment the Hibbing, Minnesota native signed it. This pristine bat is accompanied by a LOA from PSA/DNA, who have assigned this bat the unimpeachable grade of MINT 9 (AB10127).
