Although Ty Cobb played baseball in an era where many players worked second jobs, Cobb amassed a considerable fortune in his later years through shrewd investing and intelligent business deals. His fortune grew so great that, in his later life, he donated $100,000 to build a hospital in Georgia. The career .366 hitter has a complex legacy, but his generous actions had a lasting impact after his death in 1961.
Cobb’s baseball career spanned 24 years, most notably with the Detroit Tigers, and when he retired, Cobb was the all-time leader in hits and was a member of the inaugural Hall of Fame class of 1936. Offered here is a signed check from April 22, 1932 – only four short years after his playing career was over. This 3 x 8 ½ inch check was drawn from “The Anglo & London Paris National Bank of San Francisco” and made out to “Mrs. T.R. Cobb” signed in his writing in the amount of $251.00 – which would be roughly $4,600.00 in today’s money. Cobb also signed his name “Tyrus R. Cobb” in bold pen on the bottom of the check. The date “April-27-“ was hand written, along with the “2” written after the pre-printed “193”. Cobb’s first wife Charlie signed the back of the check “Mrs. T.R. Cobb” in black pen. The check is in excellent condition with the pin-hole markings that read “PAID * 5*9 32 11.17” on the left side. The back of the check has three stampings from Georgia Railroad Bank & Trust dated May 4, 1932, a bold red stamp from the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta dated May 5, 1932 and a stamp from the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco dated May 9, 1932. This is a wonderful rare double-signed Ty Cobb item and this comes with a full LOA from PSA/DNA (AB03148).
