In 1961, Roger Maris did what many thought was impossible by knocking down Babe Ruth’s single season home run record when he hit his 61st of the season in the year’s final game. Maris’ solo home run was the only run in the Yankees 1-0 win over the Red Sox, and it secured a wondrous 109-win season for the Bronx Bombers. Maris was named the American League MVP for the second straight season, and along with Mickey Mantle he led the Yankees to a five-game victory over the Cincinnati Reds in the World Series.
This black and white, 7 ¼ x 9 ¼ inch photograph shows Maris watching his 61st home run leave yard. Maris’ blast dropped into the right field bleachers of Yankee Stadium, cementing Maris’ place in history. Maris has signed this photograph in red pen, writing “To Stan / Good Luck” above his signature. This item, which comes in a 12 ½ x 14 ½ inch frame, comes with a LOA from JSA (Y95563).
